CommentThe tide was ebbing at Werribee TP and these Red-necked Avocets and White-headied Stilts were flying towards another freshly revealed mudflat calling for their attentions. The two species seem close companions in their muddy excavatory work, though the Avocets with their upturned beaks excel at upending invertebrates merely by touch. The Stilts, for their part, are quick to pluck at anything they see, including no doubt the odd morsel that an Avocet might have upended. The Stilts are found around most of Australia in both saline and freshwater wetlands while Avocets have a predilection for salt lakes, saline lagoons and sheltered inlets.
