CommentI had seen a small group of Blue-winged Parrots on a previous occasion at Western Lagoon foraging in the grass alongside the vehicle track, not the most photogenic of locations. This time, however, I came across a whole flock of some 30 Blue-wings both on the track and in the surrounding coastal scrub. According to their Birdlife profile, there seems some mystery as to whether most Blue-wings move north in winter or whether the ones that move north after breeding in Victoria are replaced by Blue-wings migrating from Tasmania, in which case the flock I came across may have only recently arrived from Tassie. Because they are so uncommon, they are less photographed than many other species, and often taken at ground level or perched on wires or fences. From my car “hide” I was able to photograph some in flight, as well as others foraging in the coastal saltmarsh scrub, where they feed on seeds of shrubby and beaded glassworts. This photo of the one in flight and others perched shows their prominent blue wings, and beautiful pastel shades of green and yellow on neck, breast and belly. Some Blue-wings apparently have a slightly orange belly, just to tease twitchers that what they might be seeing is an Orange-bellied Parrot. But this group were not out to tease me: they all had the more standard Blue-wing yellow belly.
