CommentNew Hollands are noted for many things, particularly their manic life style powered by all the sugar hits they imbibe from the nectar of flowering eucalypts and shrubs. Many of the eucalypts surrounding or close to the Royal Park Wetlands are now in full flower, and there is a very vocal flock of New Hollands to be discovered there, incessantly cheeping and tseeing to each other as they move from tree to tree or shrub to shrub. One New Holland skill I observed was an ability to hover on the outside of a tree to suck nectar out of eucalypt “pom-poms” at branch tips. Here is one doing exactly that. I have seen Pardalotes hovering in much the same way to feed on lerp but this is the first time I have seen New Hollands hovering too. So our New Holland Honeyeaters can hover with the best of them, humming birds, kestrels, black-shouldered kites, pardalotes. Lively irrepressible creatures…anything you can do, we can do too!
