CommentThis Eastern Spinebill, probably female from her grey crown (compared to the jet black of a male), was prancing to and fro amidst some flowering correa in a wooded area close to the Royal Park Wetlands. She is most probably an immature first-year bird given her brown-red rather than deeper or brighter red eyes. As a fellow birdwatcher (who had seen the Spinebills earlier) observed, they would retreat inside the bush if they became aware of you, as, indeed, this one did, keeping a close eye on me and waiting impatiently for me to go away, so she could continue using her long curved bill to reach deep down into the yellow correa trumpets for the nectar inside. And from all the pollen on her face, she was obviously as determined to get to the bottom of things as any child licking the last ice cream from a cone.
