Comment(Eastern Great Egret. Ardea modesta). The IUCN Red List has the Great Egret listed as ‘Least Concern’, but recently the Australian Great Egret was elevated to full species status under the name of ‘Eastern Great Egret’. In parts of Australia this egret is under threat, and indeed in WA it is listed as ‘Endangered’. However, for now it is a common and easy bird to get to see around Perth due to its large size and eye-catching, white plumage. It is not too shy around people either, and if one can get up early in the morning, you may see it around any wetland or at the rivers and estuaries, sometimes standing close together in shallow water, stalking prey. It will take fish, frogs, tadpoles, small mammals and crustaceans, which it catches by stabbing the prey and then flinging it into the bill with a quick flick of the neck. Before swallowing the morsel, it will position it head down in the bill. Bibra Lake; GPS. IUCN Status: Not yet available for ssp. modesta from IUCN’s Red List by 01.02.2020
EquipmentPlease note that this image proved very difficult to process and spent a long time in ‘Critique Gallery’. Before submitting it to ‘New Images’ I re-worked it many times based on advice from the moderators et al. In the end, it is a result of the efforts of many, but also the image presentation and finish I myself felt most confident with. This final Jpg version was re-worked in Adobe Photoshop CC 2020 from a Tiff file via the previous PSD file incorporating further sharpening/noise reduction in Topaz. To the very end, some experimentation was involved. Equipment: Olympus OM-D E-M1X camera body with Olympus 300mm f4 IS Pro ED M.Zuiko lens + MC-14 Teleconverter.
