CommentThe Inland Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo ssp. Calyptorhynchus banksii samueli, one of five subspecies of the nominal species (C. banksii) is most often known simply as ‘The Redtail’. It is difficult to visually separate from the other two WA subspecies, the main difference being a slightly shorter bill. Certain identification depends rather on where on the map in WA, you are: Samueli is found in the Wheatbelt area from Nortem to Wiluna and further east, and then north to the Minilya River and back south again hugging the coastal regions. Going readily to ground to feed it has taken a liking to the seed of the introduced Doublegee. It has also learned to feed in fallow fields, looking for grain and it does so in flocks. The native habitat is semiarid and the vegetation likewise. The natural diet consists of seeds from grevilleas, banksias and native grasses as well as the small fruits of acacias and Sclerolaena. Breeding is from August to early October. Ninghan Station; GPS. Status (Museum of WA): Least Concern
