CommentEastern Yellow Robins pounce on their insect prey from perches close to the ground. Spiders, dragonflies, grubs, butterflies and other creepy crawlies. They are not fussy. Here is one perched on a low branch, either looking for prey or just waiting impatiently for me to go on my way. This particular robin is banded on both legs, possibly one of the Eastern Yellows being studied as part of a Monash University study of these birds in the Muckleford State Forest and at Crusoe Reservoir near Bendigo (which is where I found this one). The study is examining the possibility that genetically there are two look-alike Eastern Robin sub-species, one found on the east and one on the west of the Great Dividing Range. Human observers can’t tell the difference but apparently the birds themselves can (connectingcountry.org.au/eastern-yellow-robin-more-than-meets-the-eye/). Such a beautiful and manic little creature, strutting its stuff despite being manacled. Admittedly this is for a noble and necessary ornithological purpose. If only we could tell her that.
