CommentThis Yellow-faced Honeyeater may be contemplating whether it is time to start on their annual migration northwards along the Great Dividing Range during Autumn and Winter. The cold April mornings (down to 3C some mornings) on the Coliban Main Channel close to Taradale in north central Victoria may be inclining this Yellow-faced to think that a move to warmer climes is definitely required. John Gould (Birds of Australia VI) was very taken with the Yellow-faced Honeyeater: “It is very animated and sprightly in its actions, and during the months of spring and summer is constantly engaged in singing; its melodious song…being poured forth while the bird is perched on the topmost branches of the trees”. This one was not singing for me but certainly displaying its distinctive yellow under-eye crescent framed by black “spectacle” frames above and below, and a beautiful grey streaked waistcoat. Glad to have seen you now, in mid-autumn, before you set off on your northerly travels. As Victoria enters its usual winter cold and gloom, many human-species Victorians will be thinking of doing likewise, Covid and budgets permitting.
