Nikon has announced the NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR zoom. This looks like being an excellent lens for Nikon bird photographers. It is slighly longer (600 vs 500), slightly brighter (f/6.3 vs f7.1 at max telephoto) and some $1000 cheaper RRP than the Canon R 100-500. It also has an internal zoom so doesn't change length when zooming (the Canon has an extending lens tube). Minimum focus distance seems pretty good and it weighs about 2kg.

A great lens for the $ and lighter than my 200 - 500 one. Clearer photos. I have a Z8.

I have acquired both this lens and the Z8 and am still assessing whether the combination is any improvement over the Z7ii plus fixed 500mm lens. The extra weight is certainly an issue, and am still not sure whether the new lens has quite the same definition as the fixed 500mm but I note that Nikon have not classified it as an S lens. Will probably continue to use the Z7ii plus 500mm for lengthy walks where low weight is going to be important.
