CommentWhile surveying the Nooramunga Marine and Coastal Park east of Wilson's Prom we observed a flock of over 500 mixed tern species. The majority were the Western Pacific Little tern ssp sinensis and most (>95%) were in non-breeding plumage. There are 3 populations of Little Tern in Australia, all of this ssp. The south-eastern population, which is most under threat, will generally be in breeding plumage in early summer. The other 2 populations- those migrating from Asia and those migrating from the Northern Australia breeding population will generally be in non-breeding plumage in early summer. They cannot be morphologically distinguished.
