CommentThis strange looking bird was certainly one I was not expecting to see on the side of a road leading into the Kamarook part of the Bendigo National Park. Identifying it later in the Australian Bird Guide, I discovered that it is a Helmeted Guineafowl, native to Africa but introduced to Australia and other parts of the world as mainly domesticated birds but with feral populations observed in parts of Queensland or from aviary escapees across Australia. In this case, I suspect it was from a nearby farm close to the road. Its red helmet is very evident in the photo, as too its white polka dot plumage. However, as Simon Pelling notes, the domestication process has changed its plumage colour considerably from the native African species, which has a much darker plumage (see photo at https://ebird.org/species/helgui). A little emblem of Africa in the steppes of outback Victoria.
