CommentBirding, and especially bird photography, along the Old Coen Road Track in Iron Range NP, was far more challenging than I had expected. The birds are elusive, often hidden in dark rainforest with plenty of foliage to give cover. As often is the case, the birds tended to occur in seams . I think the different species move through the forest together feeding within their specific niche but cognoscente of the the alarm calls of each different bird to improve their detection of any imminent predatory danger. I my few weeks there, I often found that the Frilled-necked Monarch was the first bird I would observe before being suddenly surrounded by many different species. This male bird is differentiated from the female by a black chin spot and black lores.
