CommentDriving along the The Spit track besides the Western Lagoon, WTP, I was approaching a line of Little Ravens, dark sentinels, each perched on separate fence poles. All but one flew off as I approached. This one remained, complaining bitterly, and continued to do so even as I stopped my car close by. Later inspection revealed it as a juvenile, with pale blue eyes and pink gape. Its tip of tail longer than its primaries distinguishes it from larger Australian Ravens. No doubt there was much to complain about, whether the sudden disappearance of its parents or their failure to turn up in a timely way with sustenance. Having recently become a grandparent of 4- and 5-month old babies, I have become reacquainted with the insistent cries of newborns when hunger strikes. Impossible to ignore, as any harried parent might attest. On the other hand, if Poe is to be believed, ravens may be made of sterner stuff: “Quoth the raven, ‘Nevermore’” (“The Raven”).
