CommentThese Red-necked Stints, and a few Curlew Sandpipers, were found doing their best to explore some shallow waters at high tide at Western Treatment Plan. They were probably waiting for the mudflats to be exposed and the real breakfasting to begin. The tiny Stints with their short stubby bills are the main group in front. The five, only slightly bigger, Curlew Sandpipers with their down-curved longer bills may be seen at the back on the left hand side. Both species are summer visitor migrants to Australia, breeding some 13,000 km away in the Russian arctic. All the ones here are juveniles, photographed in July. The youngsters overwinter in Australia for their first one or two years before setting off with their parents on the very demanding journey via the East Asian-Australasian Flyway to their Arctic breeding grounds around April, returning around September. The early morning sun is highlighting their juvenile plumage with the “drop-anchor” shaped markings on their backs. Four or five of the Stints are already entering their September to October fresh darker plumage. For the time being, the youngsters are confined to their Australian quarters but they will probably see distant shores well before locked-down Australians can do so again.
