CommentThis circle of five Red-necked Avocets was found in company with White-headed Stilts and Silver Gulls working the mudflats as the tide ebbed on the shoreline bordering Lake Borrie. The four with deep brownish-red heads and necks are adults while the one in the front centre with its less reddish head is most probably a juvenile. Like the Banded Stilt, the Red-necks breed mainly in inland South and Western Australia and only comes to visit us here in Victoria out of breeding season. These Avocet Rednecks seem placid enough creatures, with their gentle eyes, slender upturned bills, and graceful way of moving around. Elegant birds indeed.
