CommentThe Black-shouldered Kite is a medium-sized, common kite reported from most of Australia. Having benefited from man’s agricultural practices, and preferring open habitats, this kite is often seen hovering over freshly worked-over fields. When hunting, wings fluttering, it will abruptly ease into a glide with upswept wings, if no prey is spotted below. Equally, it likes to sit patiently on an exposed perch, looking for prey on the ground. When a small animal is spotted, it will swoop down and try to grab it with the sturdy talons. Feeding mostly on rodents, it also takes small reptiles and grasshoppers, which may be eaten in flight or taken to a favourite branch to be broken up in case of a bigger morsel. Aerial courtship can be spectacular, and once paired off nesting material is collected by both sexes, but only the larger female is the builder. The sexes are similar, but juveniles have a rufous wash on the breast and neck. Woodman Point GPS. Status (2008): Least Concern
