CommentThese individuals are highly likely to have migrated from the South Island, where this species breeds, to the North Island to overwinter. Note that, unlike the Pied Oystercatch, which specializes on non-rocky substrates, this species can be expected on pebble beaches as well as sandy beaches and mudflats.
