CommentThis was one of several birds fitted with a satellite transmitter in a joint Japanese- Australian migration tracking project. Note the transmitter on the back of the bird. Unfortunately one of the cords holding the transmitter in place has slipped between the upper and lower mandibles of the bird. It is visible in this image. The bird could not feed properly. IMO, the project team went to heroic lengths to recapture this bird in order to relieve it of the transmitter. At least one of the transmitter birds is now making its way north for the winter. This image is one of a set of three images of the same bird submitted to BLP. Note also the ability (known as rhynchokinesis) of the Latham's Snipe to change its bill shape. In this case the tip of the upper mandible is bent upwards.
