CommentNote the hook or 'tooth' protruding forward and down from the top section of its bill (upper mandible). This is apparently typical of many falcon species too and is used to kill prey.

The bird was in a low tree right next to the carpark at the Oxley Creek Common. We were alerted to its presence by alarm calls of noisy miners. It was in no hurry to leave in spite of the noisy miners and we were able to spend a quarter of an hour watching and photographing it. At one point, it landed in a short tree I was standing under, only 3 metres above my head. I moved back and got quite a few shots of it at fairly close range. I doubt I'll ever be that lucky again - and it was the first time I'd ever sighted this species too! The crop represents a touch under 20% of the frame area.
EquipmentCanon 80D with 100-400mm handheld at 400mm
1/1600 sec, f 8, ISO 1600.
Initially processed in Canon DPP 4 to crop, adjust exposure and lighting and perform noise reduction. A 16 bit TIFF file was created from the RAW DPP image and finished in PSE (Adobe Photoshop Elements v9) where further noise reduction was applied to the main subject using Neat Image plugin for PSE. The background was noise reduced and the main subject sharpened.
