CommentIt is tiring work feeding incessantly to build up your reserves for a 13,000km jaunt across the globe to rendezvous with your beloved in the Siberian Arctic where you breed. This elegant Common Greenshank can be excused a yawn or two as I watched it at T-Section Lagoon, Werribee. It is beginning to acquire its fresher and darker breeding plumage compared to its non-breeding greys. Having arrived in Australia around August and September, Common Greenshanks return to Siberia in March and April. This one must be about to leave any day, and will likely fly straight out of Australia, perhaps stopping over in Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Japan and northeast China (https://hanzab.birdlife.org.au/species/common-greenshank/). Called “Common” but now not common at all. It is listed as “vulnerable” in the latest Action Plan for Australian Birds 2020 (p.305), experiencing a sharp 34% decline over the past 15 years, with only an estimated 23,700 individuals now reaching Australian shores.
