CommentInhabiting sandy beaches and tidal mudflats, but also rockier, coastal habitats, the Australian Pied Oystercatcher is a familiar sight in the Perth Region of Western Australia. Here, a flock of these oystercatchers were quietly foraging at Point Walter Sand Bar in the Swan River, but sometimes noisy squabbles broke out, probably when an unpaired bird tried to lure someone else’s partner away. Here, one such usurper is well and truly seen off by the partner proper. As many as 17 birds were present that morning, and these squabbles came and went with regularity and thoroughly interrupted the otherwise peaceful and quiet feeding periods. But for once, the troublemaker always returned to continue the quiet feeding with an air of innocence, as if nothing had happened. I am pretty certain the depicted, flying birds are a male and a female, based on the difference in their bills. Time of capture 07:58.
