CommentKnowing that these seemingly quite small and frail Sharp-tailed Sandpipers are about to depart next month or so for their epic annual 13,000km flight to their breeding grounds in the Siberia Arctic, not to return until next August or September, I was anxious to have at least one good photo of them in flight as a kind of memento of how they might look on their journey. Amongst the reeds of the lagoon, they were quite inconspicuous but when they took to the air it was a different story. This group, flying low over the Western Lagoon, are displaying their beautiful wide wings that will no doubt help them make the most of prevailing winds between here and the Arctic. The white margins to their dark-centred wing feathers are part of what makes them such an arresting sight.
