CommentNot far from Kirk Point at Werribee Treament Plant, I watched with fascination as an armada of Australian Pelicans set sail across the water in search of a shoal of fish. Joining the armada were numerous Pied and Little Black Cormorants, periscopes up, more than happy to be convoy escorts and share in the spoils. Silver Gulls may also be seen, the aerial and sea scouts for the expedition, certainly not wanting to miss out on anything the Pelicans happened to overlook. Pelicans, of course, are renowned for their cooperative teamwork in shepherding a shoal of fish within the confines of a particular location, and then scooping them up into their capacious beaks and pouches for later digestion. The Great Pied Cormorant periscopers may be distinguished from their Little Black colleagues by their just visible orange and yellow breeding facial patches between their eyes and their beak.
