CommentThis Red-Rumped Parrot Pair were noticed exploring a large dead tree in the Woodlands Historic Park back paddock, perhaps looking for a suitable nesting hollow. The male on the right with his brilliant green, blue and yellow plumage, seemed content to just look on, while the female with her more demure scalloped olive green and pale grey outfit seemed to do most of the exploring. In the photo, she has just returned back to join her partner after checking out a couple of hollows. The verdict may still be out on which hollow to choose but the photo does show something of their relationship and the kind of habitat they prefer. Woodlands Historic Park retains many huge River Red Gums, both living and dead, with many nesting hollows congenial to parrots. The proximity of some untouched native grasslands within the same park makes this a particularly attractive habitat for Red Rumps, who feed primarily on grass seeds and green tips of weeds.
