CommentSurely one of the most beautiful species of bird when in breeding plumage, the Cattle Egret can be found breeding in a Mandurah suburb. I was aware of this breeding colony for some years, but this was the first time I went there during the breeding season, and I captured a number of very colourful and spectacular images in the early morning sunlight. It should be noted that no colour enhancement was applied during post processing; only shadows and highlights were manipulated and selective sharpening performed as I saw fit, and the breeding male (sex based on observation) seen here in courtship flush pretty much matches the RAW file with respect to coloration. I first saw and photographed a Cattle Egret in breeding plumage at Herdsman Lake in 2001, but since then it has spread and become much more common; especially Baldivis renders many observations of this species in the Perth Greater Metro.

Nikon ViewNX-i for viewing and selecting files; Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw/CC 2020 for resizing image and cropping to 160%, selective sharpening and some general post-processing such as lifting of shadows. ‘Australian Bird Guide 2019’ for supplementary data and colour checks.
