CommentOn the first morning in Melbourne lockdown on which we were allowed to spend two hours exercising rather than just one, I was delighted to be welcomed back to some of the further reaches of Coburg Lake Reserve by this Willie Wagtail. Small birds are far less common at the Lake these days, partly due to increased numbers of larger birds but also the feral cats who have taken up residence there. The one in the photo posed perfectly for me a few paces away, and then circled around me, from tree to tree. There is no better description of a Wagtail than Judith Wright’s: “So elegant he is and neat/from round black head to slim black feet! He sways and flirts upon the fence, his collar clean as innocence”. I like the photo for the way it conveys the assertiveness of the tiny bird and how it is framed against the green leafy background.
