CommentAs we ventured out for our one permitted hour of exercise in the heart of locked-down coronavirus capital, Melbourne, we arrived at Royal Park Wetlands and there, right on cue for the first day of spring, were the Welcome Swallows wheeling, swooping, dipping, skimming, and circling back again, sewing together the trees, water, and sky as only swallows can. Welcome indeed. At least something is still all right and dependable in our fragile fraught world. The first day of spring is also Wattle Day, (sometimes advanced as a more hopeful and less backward looking alternative for choosing to celebrate Australia Day), and here on cue too were all the wattles exploding into a riot of yellow. And just as delightful was suddenly to catch sight of a Superb Blue Fairy Wren flying in and out of the wattle, as shown in this photo. Not perfect. Not close enough. No time for perfect composition. But it does gives some sense of the exhilaration and hope you can feel as birds like these welcome you into spring at a time like this.
