CommentThere are two reasons why I have entered this photo. Firstly although it does not show the entire bird there is enough information in the bill length, head colouring and behaviour to clearly identify the species. So it is a test for the observer to use their bird ID skills. Secondly I was pleased to be able to capture this bird feeding. It paused just l long enough for me to capture an image with its bill inside the flower. I also loved the tradeoff it was making between feeding and safety. It was certainly aware that I was nearby holding a large camera and lens but it chose to have a feed whilst still keeping an eye on me. Whilst the side of the face is not in direct sunlight I like the way the backlight highlights the feathers (if this is what they are called) around the start of its bill and the tuft outside its neck. The only downside is that the bright red flowers which attracted the bird in the first place can distract attention from the bird in the photo. Perhaps this is part of its feeding plan.
