CommentThe shot was taken at one of the water troughs at Gluepot. These were attracting very large numbers of birds in the drought conditions. In this case, there were large numbers of Spiny-cheeked Honeyeaters queuing for a drink and conflict inevitably arose from time to time. To capture this, This shot was taken with my lens auto-focus still turned on, I think. However, that was too hit-and-miss so for another session trying to get shots like this the next day, I turned the AF off (manual focus mode), pre-focussed on the perch, closed the aperture down for greater depth of field then simply pointed the camera and fired off a burst as soon as some action looked like ti would unfold. There is a touch of motion blur on the head of the bird on the right. I've applied some unsharp mask to this area only to remedy.
EquipmentCanon 80D with EF 100-400mm Mark 2, handheld at 400mm 1/800 sec, f9, ISO 1600. Initially processed in Canon DPP 4 to crop, adjust exposure and lighting and perform noise reduction (at about 50% of default values). A 16 bit TIFF file was created from the RAW DPP image and finished in PSE (Adobe Photoshop Elements v9) where further noise reduction was applied to the main subject(s) using Neat Image plugin for PSE. Stronger noise reduction was applied to the remainder. Main subject selected and adjustments made to lighten shadows, darken highlights and increase midtone contrast as appropriate. Inverse of main subject selected and adjustments made as appropriate to contrast, highlights, shadows and saturation to make the bird stand out more effectively. Main subject sharpened after resizing for upload.
