CommentThe Ruddy Turnstone breeds in the High Arctic of Canada, Alaska and Greenland and along Scandinavian coastlines. Furthermore, in Eurasia it breeds along the coast of the Arctic Ocean, taking in wet areas of the tundra. A small, stout wader it is classified in the sandpiper family. Of the population wintering in Victoria, one particular bird is known to have arrived from Siberia via the East Asian-Australian Flyway and a fuel stop in the tidal flats of the Yellow Sea, only to return to the breeding grounds in due course using an alternative route traversing the Pacific Ocean via Kiribati, a round trip of 23.600 km at an average speed of ca. 52 km/hour while on the wing. Arriving in Australia from August onwards, by mid April they are all gone, as they must lay their eggs early in the short, Arctic breeding season, i.e. no later than primo July. While in Australia it feeds on maggots found in rotting seaweed, preferably on rocky beaches. Woodman Point; GPS Status (2019): Least Concern
EquipmentOlympus OM-D E-M1X camera body with Olympus 300mm f4 IS Pro ED M.Zuiko lens + MC-14 Teleconverter; Velbon Neo Carmagne Carbon Tripod with Manfrotto Ball Head Art 498RC2. Camera settings: Exposure Program/Shooting Mode: ‘Manual’; shutter speed 1/1600 sec, f5.6 & ISO-400. Metering Mode: ‘CenterWeightedAverage’; Focus Mode: ‘Continous-AF’ with the AF-system further set to ‘AF-Target Mode’ with a target group of 9 sensors (3x3). Drive: ‘Sequential shooting (3frame)’ in ‘Continuous Low’. Maximum burst rate habitually set to 12 to prevent filling up the buffer for which reason also I only shoot in RAW. Image Stabilizer on (S-SIS AUTO); In-camera Sharpness +2. (These settings are also the combination I favour for birds in flight; it took a lot of experimentation with the OM-D E-M1X/300 mm F4 lens combo to find a merger of settings suitable for this noble discipline.) Olympus Workspace for metadata; FastStone for viewing & sorting; Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw/CC 2020 for post-processing; Topaz Pro plug-ins Sharpen AI, DeNoise AI & Studio 2 for sharpening and noise control. Victorian Wader Study Group/Deakin University and ‘Australian Bird Guide 2019’ for identification, supplementary data and colour checks.
