Sooty Tern

CommentSsp serrata which breeds on tropical and sub-tropical islands of the Great Barrier Reef, Lord Howe Is and Norfolk Is. This individual is an adult in non-breeding plumage which according to the CSIRO 'Guide' is seldom seen in Australian waters. It was the only Sooty Tern we photographed at Michaelmas Cay in non-breeding plumage. The most obvious ID points are the white streaks in the crown and the greyish-white scaly fringes to the feathers on the mantle and back which are just visible in the image.
EquipmentCanon 5Ds + 400 mm f/4 DO II + 1.4x III extender, hand-held.
Manual, spot metering, AI Servo AF with 4-pt expansion, f/5.6, 1/2500 sec, ISO 1250.
Processed using DPP4 and PSE14 with Neat Image plug-in.
