CommentHello, I am a new member. I had been practising using a new lens and photographing the rainbow lorikeet in my backyard, when the noisy miner photo-bombed and tried to dislodge the lorikeet. I am contemplating submitting this image in the backyard birds category of the BirdLife Aust photo competition. I am seeking feedback as to whether this image is too 'busy' wrt the grevillea and whether the noisy miner not being in sharp focus will be a major issue. Any other comments are also welcome. I don't have any post-processing software (other than the Microsoft office editor) as yet, but I would consider myself as being at an intermediate level otherwise. Thank you in anticipation.

Mary Wheeler2026-06-21 18:12:26Hi Alison,
Welcome to BirdLife Photography and please accept our apologies for not replying to your request sooner. We are all volunteers and sometimes things get a bit busy. I see that you shoot with Olympus. I may not be able to give you an in depth appraisal of you image as I have had no experience with Olympus cameras..I shoot Canon. But on first impressions I do find the highlights in the background of your image somewhat distracting. It may be advisable if you are able, to get hold of some processing software such as Lightroom for instance, where you could select only the background, and reduce the highlights in that area. A Google search may point you in the right direction for some free software that will handle Olympus files. Also I would probably not crop the image so tightly. Let the viewer see more of the action particularly, the Rainbow Lorikeet. I hope this has been of some help.
Mary Wheeler
