| Comment | I found a corner of a pond where dragonflies were mating and laying eggs. While coupled, the dragonflies would fly low over the water, the female dipping her abdomen to lay eggs. This provided a feeding opportunity for a Eurasian Coot that eagerly stalked the couples and made a meal of them. Capturing the shot presented technical difficulties. I was working close to the minimum focal distance of the lens with a consequent shallow depth of field. I was using eye-tracking AF which was satisfactory while the bird's eye was visible and until the bird made a final lunge at the dragonflies at which moment eye-tracking and sharp focus was often lost. Framing and composition were good luck rather than good management. I captured many frames with unacceptable head angle, beak not well opened, poor position of the dragonflies, head of the bird or dragonflies out of focus. The shot I have entered in the comp is one of few where everything came together with exquisite timing, acceptable image quality and good composition. | ||||||||||||||||||
