| Comment | A pair of Galahs affectionately mutually preening in the early morning sun at Beach Rd, Werribee. According to Gisela Kaplan, Galah “mutual preenings clearly form part of a synchronizing set of activities” as part of courtship relationships and long-term bonding" (Bird Bonds, p,245).The pair were doing this on a branch just below an Australian Hobby perched above them. The proximity seemed a little risky given Hobbies are known for aggressively pursuing both small and larger birds. (https://hanzab.birdlife.org.au/species/australian-hobby/). But perhaps local Galahs and Hobbies have reached an understanding with each other. Galahs are monogamous, and HANZAB says pairs “usually remain together till one member dies” and “remain together constantly except when one is on the nest” (https://hanzab.birdlife.org.au/species/galah/). Galahs would no doubt concur with Shakespeare: “love is not love/which alters when it alteration finds”. | ||||||||||||||||||
