| Comment | My first sighting of a Spotted Harrier, so very exciting. Less common than the Swamp Harrier, here in Victoria they are mainly observed in the Murray Valley north of 37 degrees South (https://hanzab.birdlife.org.au/species/spotted-harrier/). It was seen here patrolling the The Spit Nature Conservation Reserve bordering the Western Lagoon, Werribee. No doubt it was on a search for its preferred prey of quail, songlarks, pipits, mice, rats and rabbits (ibid.), with rabbits in no short supply in this vicinity. Its stunning white-spotted dark plumage is on display here, as too its beautiful black-banded grey upper wings and tail, and chestnut shoulder patch. | ||||||||||||||||||
