CommentProcessed initially in Canon DPP4; background brightness reduced, cropped, some noise reduction and sharpening. Saved as a 16 bit TIFF. Then Topaz for noise and sharpening. finally back into DPP4 for resize. Would like some feedback on the post processing: is the brightness right, is the sharpness acceptable and any general advice. Finally after the feedback is it normal to then resubmit the image to new images for general viewing, once adjustments are incorporated?

I am still seeing the same issues here as with other images on which I have commented. I think the bird has been excessively smoothed probably by noise reduction. I think the underlying sharpness is there, but too much fine detail has been smoothed away.

If you are going to use Topaz, I don't think that it is necessary to do noise reduction in DPP, but if you have received advice from Glenn Pure on this, I am happy to defer to Glenn as he uses DPP as part of his normal workflow, I don't. Topaz can also be used to sharpen the image.

Short of sitting at a computer watching you do it, I am not sure exactly which step in your workflow is the problem, but I suspect your settings in Topaz are just to high. Is it possible in Topaz to differentiate between different parts of the image? If that is possible, then perhaps you could try different levels of NR in different parts of the image. (I don't use Topaz and have had limited experience with it.)

Just about every one of your images that I have seen have this parallel diagonal line pattern in the background out of focus areas. The fact that it is an issue across multiple photos suggests that it is part of the camera and lens set up, rather than due to heat effects or other environmental issues. Are you useing a protective or UV filter on your lens? If you are, take it off and see if the effect disappears. Filters can be problematic when it comes to image quality (and are not really all that much help in terms of protection) and in my view are best done without except in the most hazardous environments. If not it might be the lens itself. Try shooting some test shots with a different lens and see what happens. I think it would be good for you to try and get to the bottom of this, because it affects the quality of your images in a detrimental way.

Best wishes
Simon
