CommentA whole bird shot from relatively close. I've had to add canvas to the bottom as the bird was close to the edge of the frame. This species is a Christmas Island endemic (3,000 breeding pairs estimate) and the largest of the world's Boobies as well as the rarest. It has a wingspan of around 2 metres! I was fortunate to witness a number of them flying about from this lookout the day I was there; not seen on subsequent visits. Pink bill with black tip and black eye skin indicates and adult female.
EquipmentCanon R5 with RF 100-500mm, handheld at 500mm 1/5000 sec, f/7.1, ISO 1600. Initially processed in Canon DPP 4 to crop, adjust exposure and lighting. All noise reduction turned off in DPP. A 16 bit TIFF file was created from the RAW DPP image and finished in PSE (Adobe Photoshop Elements) where noise reduction was applied to the main subject(s) using Neat Image plugin for PSE. Stronger noise reduction was applied to the remainder. Main subject selected and adjustments made to lighten shadows, darken highlights and increase midtone contrast as appropriate. Inverse of main subject selected and adjustments made as appropriate to contrast, highlights, shadows and saturation to make the bird stand out more effectively. Main subject sharpened after resizing for upload.
