CommentI thought at first this might be a Brolga but actually it is the lookalike Sarus Crane. The Sarus has a more extended red band on its neck and lacks a dewlap. This was one of a pair crossing overhead as we explored the back blocks west of Mareeba. They have a much more limited range than Brolgas, mainly confined to northern coasts of Queensland and Northern Territory, and inland Eastern Queensland during the dry season.
