CommentThis uncommonly beautiful Common Greenshank was on its own in one of the Western Lagoon ponds. It will be heading off on its 11,000km journey to its Siberian breeding grounds before too long, perhaps in late March or early April. Its slightly upturned bill and size distinguish it from its smaller cousin, the Marsh Sandpiper, also seen in the same vicinity. The estimated 23,700 mature individual population of Greenshanks has declined by 30-50% over the past 19 years (Australian Action Plan for Australian Birds 2020), so, as for many of our other migratory birds, the need for addressing all the threats to its coastal habitats from climate change and human impacts is more urgent than ever even though it is not as yet needing to have its name changed to Uncommon Greenshank.
