CommentGrass. Barbed Wire. Fairy Martin. Perhaps not the most fitting of surroundings to do justice to a beautiful Fairy Martin, otherwise known as the Bottle Swallow (for its bottle-shaped mud or clay nest), no doubt attracted to the WTP by the swarms of insects hovering above Lake Borrie. Slightly ruffled by the wind, this one, with its reddish-brown crown, is taking a rest from aerial hunting, and probably a juvenile given its buff-tinged wing feathers. But perhaps the image does tell a story. Grass for the natural environment. Barbed wire for how we humans try to keep others in (like convicts) or out (like refugees). Fairy Martins, carefree birds who are free to alight where they will, untroubled by the ugly terrestrial barriers we humans erect.
