CommentSome Red-necked Stints explore the receding tide on the WTP shoreline. They are the tiniest of the extraordinary migrants waders who arrive on Australian shores every summer after 12,000km journeys from their breeding grounds in arctic Siberia. Here they are in their non-breeding plumage but their scientific name, Calidris ruficollis, derives from their striking reddish throat and red-tinged wings during breeding season. Just 130 to 170mm long, and weighing as little as 21 gms, it is astonishing to think of them having the strength and resilience to fly from one side of the globe to the other twice each year. Considering how we humans fete and honour our intrepid yachties or aviators who circumnavigate the globe with the help of the most advanced nautical and aeronautical technology, perhaps these Lilliiputian Stints are overdue for more acclaim in accomplishing the same feat with nothing more than their 100mm-wide wings, incredible determination, and miraculous stamina. Is there any other creature so small that does something so big?
