CommentIt was a pleasure to see some of our migrants, like these Curlew Sandpipers, back again after their extraordinary 12,000+ km journeys from their breeding grounds in the Siberian Arctic. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be so many here at Werribee as there were last year. This might be related to the extensive rain across Australia due to La Nina weather conditions, with migrants tempted by numerous wetland options along the way before continuing on down south. Here at Werribee, when the tide is up and their preferred coastal mudflats submerged, the Sandpipers move up into the shallow ponds and wetlands of the Western Lagoon, as this group are doing when the photo was taken, with two birds just arriving. All are in their non-breeding plumage. Their dark legs and longish downcurved beaks distinguish them from Sharp-tailed Sandpipers, also commonly seen migrants at Werribee.
