CommentA resubmission to replace an earlier post, with improved processing. The main change is a relaxation in the cropping to produce a more off-centre composition and give more space for the bird to swim in (thanks to Ian Wilson for getting me to finally see the light on this point). The re-composition also introduces some of the wave ripple pattern in the top background which adds an interesting element and gives more of a feel for the surroundings. I thought this bird was a particularly fine specimen, and photographically I like the velvety blacks the image has captured on the bird's back.
The 28-135 IS zoom was Canon's first image stablizer lens, and while not an L series it was no slouch in the sharpness stakes. Also, the venerable 20D, with only 8 megapixels on a sensor the same size as a 7D MkII, had such a low pixel count that it produced surprisingly little digital noise.
