New Resource for Members - The Role of Angle of View

We have a new article available by Simon Pelling, exploring the role of angle of view in photography.  The angle of view of a camera and lens when viewing a subject or scene depends on the lens focal length, the sensor size, and the pixel density.  Angle of view is one of the things that determines the amount of light available to the camera sensor, which in turn affects the amount of noise in an image and the signal-to-noise ratio of the sensor.  This helps us understand why large sensors have advantages over small sensors, particularly in low light situations.

This is a member's only article and can be found under Resources -> Our Articles -> In-depth Technical Articles.

February 2025 Zoom Event - Recording Now Available

For those who missed it or would like to view it again, our recent "Creating Unique Images" Zoom event from February 2025 is now available.

It can be found at Resources -> Our Zoom Presentations

This is members only - you must be logged in to access this video.

In this presentation, Richard Flack talks about different elements of composition, such as the surroundings/habitat as well as the subject, that can be used to create unique and eye-catching photos. Composition is one of the harder aspects of photography, so this is well worth a look.

Replace an Image

In our July e-News we mentioned that members would soon be able to replace the photo in an image submission.  Now you can do that!  Previously you could only change data associated with the image (e.g. comments, location, keywords, ...); now you can change the photo itself, until the image has been published by a moderator.  We have introduced this facility because moderators are more frequently suggesting post-processing changes to improve an image; allowing the image itself to be replaced means that you do not need to delete an existing submission and enter a new one; you can simply replace the image.

To do this, open the image from the My Photos page.  Immediately below the image is a "Replace Image" button; click this to open the Replace Image page, where you can select another image to replace the existing one.  If you intend to replace the image, you must do this before editing any other information on the page; any other change on the page will cause the "Replace Image" button to disappear.  When you replace the image, the EXIF data which is placed in the Equipment field and the Your Reference field (which defaults to the filename) will be automatically updated.  After you click "Save" on the Replace Image page you will be returned to the Edit My Image page, where you should check all the image data; edit and save if necessary.

It is possible, but unlikely, that you will receive a "Sorry - this item is checked out to Moderator Name" notification when you try to open the image from the My Photos page.  If so, simply wait for a while and then try again.  There is an automated check-in process which ensures that no image will remain checked out for more than 2 hours.

In conjunction with this change, a moderator now has the ability to flag that he is processing the submission for an image; this prevents any other moderator from inadvertently interfering in a submission which is in process.

Pleae use our Forum to give us your feedback on this change to the image submission process.
