DPP4 and Big Sur

DPP4 and Big Sur was created by Doug Castle
I have had my iMac upgraded with a SSD hard drive and running latest OS Big Sur. The programs were then reinstalled. DPP4 now does not run and from searching the internet it appears that it is not supported by Big Sur at this stage. Fortunately I still have it operational on my laptop (which also runs Big Sur but upgraded with DPP4 already in place). Anyone else experienced troubles and any advice welcome. Something for DPP4 users to be aware of.

Thank you Doug. I have a Mac desktop which I bought in July 2020. Before I upgrade my operating system the first thing I do is to check and see if it supports the software I am currently using. I keep getting reminders to update to Big Sur and only today I checked to see if it supports DPP 4 ,and like you all the blogs I have read suggest that it will not run. It is strange that it runs on your laptop but not on your Mac. Perhaps it has something to do with the hardware as well as the Operating System. Since I upgraded my camera to a Canon R5 , DPP4 is slower than a wet week ,so to speak ! I have been using Lightroom which runs very well on my Mac , but I have noticed that the colours do not render very well in the Adobe software. So I have gone back to DPP 4. I wish Canon would upgrade their software.

DDP4 was running on the iMac with Big Sur but as the iMac was running slowly and had shut down problems I was advised to replace the hard drive with a solid state drive. This has sped up the machine but as programs had to be reloaded with Big Sur as OS DPP4 no longer runs. I think it is OK to update to Big Sur if you already have DPP4 loaded. Fortunately my laptop is very fast and I do all my DPP4 work on it. My wife has a Canon R5 and the time taken to process files on DPP4 has increased a lot. The very fast processor (i9) on the laptop manages it reasonably well but on iMac when it was working the time taken was unacceptable. I see that this is a problem going forward with large files from mirrorless cameras and hopefully Canon will address this.

My iMac has a 3.6 GHz 8 Core Intel Core i9 with a SSD but DPP4 is very slow. My previous camera was a Canon 7DII and DPP 4 processed the CR2 files quite quickly. As you mentioned the CR3 Raw files are very large. I might do a test and change my camera settings to a smaller Raw file and see if DPP4 performs any better. Stay tuned !

Doug and Mary

I am interested to know whether this issue has been solved. I think a slightly updated version of DPP came out recently (to accommodate new cameras). Have you found a suitable solution to using DPP4 with Big Sur?

Hi Simon,
After replacing the hard drive on my iMac with a SSD I installed the latest version of DPP4 ( now updated to v4.16). It is working well but for CR3 files still a little slow. The processor on my iMac is 3.8Ghz Quad core i5. The processor on my laptop is i9 and considerably faster so I generally do the DPP4 stage of post processing on the laptop and then work on 16 bit Tif on the iMac in Lightroom and Photoshop.
