Bob Young was the first President of PhotoBOCA, the group which was established as part of Bird Observation & Conservation Australia (BOCA) in 2009, and which became BirdLife Photography (BLP) when Birds Australia (BA) and BOCA merged in January 2012 to become BirdLife Australia. He resigned as President at that time, and then continued as a committee member until May 2012.
Bob was, in reality, the founder of PhotoBoca/BLP. The initial idea of a photography special interest group arose following a weekend photography course held at the Little Desert Lodge in late 2006, which Bob organised for the Education Committee of BOCA; he then became President of the Steering Committee which brought PhotoBOCA into existence. He designed the initial PhotoBOCA website (initially set up as part of the BOCA website), and acted as the Administrator of that site until 2012. He was also the first editor of the bi-monthly PhotoBOCA newletter, serving in that role from August 2009 to August 2011. He wrote several articles for early issues of the newsletter; these are still available on this website. He organised the first Digital Photography in the Bush event at Gunbower in 2011. He drafted the initial Constitution for BLP in the months leading up to the BOCA/BA merger.
He was awarded Life Membership in June 2013.
