Tim Low wrote 'Where Song Began' about 10 years ago, on the subject of the origins of passerines in what is now Australia.  Its a few years since I read it, but if I recall correctly, he argued that modern songbirds originated in the southern hemisphere, moved north, and then there were re-colonisations of northern species moving south back into Australia.
