BirdLife Photography members are encouraged to enter our Photo Competitions, which we run on a regular basis.  Each competition has a theme, which entries must address.  The themes are published in advance - see the menu at left for forthcoming themes - so that you can be forewarned when you are out with your camera!

Each competition has categories for photographers of different level - Advanced, Intermediate and Entry level.  Members entering competitions should be realistic about which level they choose to enter.

Entries are generally open for about 6 weeks; followed by member voting for about 3 weeks.  The results of members voting are announced as Winner, Highly Commended, and Commended in each competition category.

We also appoint a Mystery Reviewer, who will select his/her best images from each level and provide a short critique of each one.  The Mystery Reviewer critiques of previous competitions are available in the Resources section of this website.

Entries from previous competitions are retained in a series of Previous Competition galleries; you can access these via the Photo Gallery - Select Gallery to View page.

The BirdLife Photography Competition Co-ordinator can invite members to move between competition levels based on their demonstrated skills; e.g. if a member is showing skill consistent with advanced level but is currently in the entry level, they will be asked to move up to the advanced level.  NOTE: Movement between competition levels will occur either at the end of the calendar year or no later than at the conclusion of the year's first competition (i.e. “Best of ...”).  If a member finishes in the top three positions in the Entry or Intermediate levels, they will automatically move up to the next level the following year.
