I am happy to go with Ian given his much more extensive knowledge of shorebirds.  The only other possibility I could see is an immature Ruff, but it seems to lack the white area around the base of the bill normally visible in Ruffs, and these are rare in Australia apparently.

Many thanks, Simon, for further confirming Ian's identification. I can see I will have my birdwatching work cut out tomorrow to have the slightest chance of spotting elusive Ruffies, Peccies, and Woodies amidst all the Sharpies currently thronging Werribee. Of course, as we dry up wetlands and swamp mudflats in our overheating planet, it may only be a few years before Sharpies too become equally elusive.
