CommentThis Brown Falcon arrived on this spar a few moments after a Black Kite had departed from the same vantage point. They are apparently fond of exposed perches, all the better for spotting their various prey, including small mammals, other birds, snakes and insects, and the numerous rabbits found at Western Treatment Plant. The Brown Falcon’s dark “tear-stripe” beneath the eye, dark eyes, dark ear patch, and barred tail are evident in this perched image. The pale blue-grey eye ring and mottled belly suggest this might be a juvenile, although plumage can apparently be very variable, and an adult male is also a possibility.
